Things will be nearly the same as last year: in that each participant can participate with a $10 suggested entry donation. Or he/she can find pledges who will support them in their quest for logging as many miles as he/she can!  Funds raised will go to local trail caretakers allowing them to commit to us trail users the continued health and prosperity of our local trail systems.

I am pleased to know that you’re interested in supporting our local trail care-takers: Quimper Trails Association, Jefferson Trails Coalition (of the Olympic Discovery Trail) and Pacific Northwest Trails Association. Sunday is our big day: June 19th is just around the corner.

Everything is the same as last year:

Please consider pre-registering. Go to our “Logistical Forms” tab and print off two forms: Registration and Liability Waiver. If you are looking for pledges, then print the Pledge form as well. Fill the two (registration and liability waiver) forms, add your $10 entry donation (checks written to your organization of choice) and get them in an envelope then delivered to local business sponsor The Broken Spoke.  The Broken Spoke is located at 835 Water Street, Port Townsend, WA. There will be a drop box clearly marked. Their hours of operation are 9am to 6pm M-Sat. I will be collecting the forms at the end of the day on Saturday. You could still try and mail it but I wonder if it wouldn’t make it to my PO Box before Sunday!!

If you are not pre-registering, please help us out and fill out the form and bring it with you when you show up on Sunday!

If you are extra lazy, please show up anyway! There will be blank forms for those who show up on event day.

*Registration booth will be at the start of the Larry Scott Memorial Trail, near the Boat Haven of the Port of Port Townsend. Please park at the Park and Ride across Sims Way.

* Sunrise to Sunset! Let’s use our trail etiquette and log as many or as few miles as we can in support of our local trail care-takers! Prizes for the participants who gather the most pledge money.

Here is the quick and dirty: The Longest Day of Trails is an event to raise money and awareness for our trail caretakers, the Quimper Trails Association, Jefferson Trails Coalition, and Pacific Northwest Trails Association. The Longest Day of Trails Fundraiser is being promoted to walkers, strollers, runners, cyclists, wheelchairs, horseback riders and all other types of trail-users. The event is all day -or- however long you’d like to be involved.

Thank you for your interest…. Now… let’s get that interest changed into commitment to involvement for the event.  The Registration form, Liability Waiver and Pledge form are up and running on the Logistical Forms Page.

1. Print the three forms, mail the Registration form, Liability Waiver and $10 entry donation in to Nicole, P.O. Box 1752, Port Townsend, WA 98368. (Checks can be made payable directly to the organization you’d like to give the money to.)

2. Find sponsors on your pledge form.

3. Tell all your friends and get them to participate either as participants or sponsors!

4. Show up for the event, and enjoy We look forward to seeing you there.

Our event was such a success last year that we want to do it again.  It will be on a Sunday, for ease of families and individuals. I realize that it’s not technically on the longest day of the season (that Tuesday the 21st); yet I know we’ll have almost as much daylight to make a difference.  The event will be similar to last year, in that it’s a do what YOU want to do. Donate what YOU want to donate. Pledge what YOU can find pledges for.

I still need a little time to get updated forms and documents, so bear with me and start thinking about what you can do to keep supporting our local trail caretakers.

Sunday is the big day. The Longest Day of Trails is finally upon us. I look forward to seeing your bright and shining faces for hours and hours   The lay-out of the day is as follows:

Please come to the registration table and Sign-in. I will be waiting at a booth in the Port Townsend Boat Haven’s connection to the Larry Scott Memorial Trail.  Event registration begins at 5:11am. You can check in at any time of the day.

You can head up the Larry Scott and choose which of the three Check-In stations you’d like to turn around at; there are three: one at 1.5 miles, one at the Cape George Trailhead, one at the end of the Larry Scott(just past the Douglas Way connection). At your “chosen” station, place your stamp on your card and then turn around and head back to the registration booth to get another stamp, then turn around and do it again!  How fun!

– In example: Suzy initially checks in at 6am. She heads up the trail and wants to turn around at the Cape George trailhead, so she passes the 1.5 mile station and goes directly to the Cape George station, gets her stamp then heads back all the way to the registration check in for another stamp. Suzy wants to do another few miles, so this time she goes all the way to the end of the trail! She gets her stamp from the station at the end of the Larry Scott, then heads all the way back to the beginning to get her next stamp. Suzy decides that is all she wants to do for the event, and then comes to the registration booth and Signs-Out. We help her close out, count up her  miles and send her on her way to go collect her pledges from her friends and family.

–Another example: Arnie initially checks in at 11:30am. He heads up to the 1.5 mile marker and gets his stamp and turns around. He heads back to the registration booth and Signs-Out. His goal was three miles and he did it! He did not find pledges but found a two donations from friends. At this point, we collect the set donations (since Arnie knew he was only doing three miles), and he’s finished.

–A third example: Mo wants to go all day! His goal is for a slow and steady event with a long break in the mid afternoon. He arrives at 5:11am to check in. He heads up to gets his stamp from the station at the end of the Larry Scott, then heads all the way back to the beginning to get his next stamp. Mo turns around and does it again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. He takes a break and goes the distance again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. and again. Finally, he has been out on his bike and the sun is going down. He heads finishes his lap and makes it to the registration booth and Signs-out. He did it! We help him close out, count up his  miles and send him on his way to go collect his pledges from his friends and family. Wow, way to go, Mo!

When you have done all the miles you can do, return to the registration booth and Sign-Out.  I will help you count your miles and we’ll go over final logistics of how to collect your pledges and what not.

~And this, my friends and fellow-community members, is how we support our local trail care-takers!! And have fun in the meantime!

I hope you all had an excellent Memorial Day weekend, and start of June.  Thank you, thank you, thank you everyone for your support.

Even though we did not meet the pre-determined registration number, I have done some pleading, finessing and brainstorming to change the layout of the event.  It still is happening! Sunday June 20th.

We will be asking for a ten dollar donation for registration (rather than a registration fee) and everything else will continue as noted.

June 20th, 2010 is the day of the event (the “day before” the longest day of the summer).

5:11am until 9:11pm:   The event is all day but you can do as little or as much as you want!!!

Larry Scott Memorial Trail, on the beautiful  Olympic Peninsula of Washington state.

From sunrise until sunset participants will log as many miles as they can during daylight hours on the longest day of the year!  Prior to the day’s event they will find pledges per mile to support all the work that our trail system provides our community.  A healthy community means a healthy trail system and vice versa.  We all need trails to keep us connected, active and interactive.

There is much for us to know and much for us to do!
